FactReview (FR) is an information integrity organization active in the field both in Greece and internationally, across research, writing, technology, and education.
FR is, among other things, a member of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN), and the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). It is also a European-recognized trusted source for flagging illegal content (DSA Trusted Flagger).
As a partner in the FACTEUR program, FR also plays an active role in supporting and protecting the fact-checking community across Europe, within the framework of the European Democracy Shield (EDS).
Introduction to fact-checking
One of the organization’s core activities is examining claims circulating in media outlets and social media accounts within Greece, and debunking or confirming them by presenting the relevant evidence (fact-checking).
Our goal is not only to identify inaccurate information, but also to provide tools to the audience that follows us, so that they can gradually develop the ability to identify claims that may be false on their own. For this reason, in addition to providing detailed information in our articles about the sources we use, on our website you will also find guides explaining the general methodology we follow when we begin examining a claim, which tools we use most often, and, in the near future, we will publish a related guide to these tools as a video series, so that the information is easier to absorb.
Fact-checking is not a new concept. On the contrary, it is an inherent part of journalism and is used by many major media outlets as part of the article publication process. The problem is that, as many media outlets try to respond to the pressure to publish material ever more quickly, information verification often takes second place, increasing the likelihood that unsupported claims will circulate. At the same time, social media pages that systematically spread false claims combine to create a particularly dangerous misinformation environment.
In this context, FactReview is one of thousands of organizations worldwide working to limit the phenomenon of misinformation by using the most up-to-date tools possible and, of course, by enlisting the help of its readers to identify potentially dangerous misinformation among the millions of article posts online.
